How Do I Wash My Synthetic Wig?

  • Gently brush the wig to remove any tangles. When brushing, start at the ends and work your way to the roots.
  • Soak in cool water and a mild shampoo for 5-10 minutes. Gently swish, do not rub.
  • Rinse thoroughly in cool water.
  • Towel blot the wig gently, do not rub.
  • Place wig on a wig stand or mannequin and let air dry at room temperature.
  • Style wig as needed when completely dry.

What Are Some General Tips on Caring for a Wig?

  • Try the "shake and go" method for your synthetic wig. Many styles need only a good shake or finger styling and they're ready to wear.
  • Keep your wig stored on a wire wig stand or mannequin head to help the wig hold its style and shape.
  • Do not try to get every hair in place.
  • Do NOT expose your synthetic hair wig to heat more than 160 degrees, like opening an over door, standing near barbecue grill and cigarette lighters. This will damage the wig fiber.
  • Do not use any form of curling iron, flat iron, hot rollers or blow dryers on a synthetic wig. Again, heat will damage the wig (this excludes the heat-friendly wigs).
  • Do not brush wigs when wet or use bleach, colors or rinses.
  • Use brushes, combs and other styling accessories specifically designed for wigs only. They make styling easier and extend the life of your wig.

What Are the Advantages to Buying a Wig In-Store?

Choosing a wig on the computer can prove to be extremely difficult and stressful. You do not have the opportunity to try on multiple styles and colors as you would in our store. Colors and styles vary greatly from pictures to how it truly looks in person. Websites also tend to only allow a certain number of returns and they also charge a restocking fee. This can take weeks (and extra money!) to finally find the best option for you!

We encourage our clients to try on multiple styles/colors before making a purchase. You may love a style on a mannequin or in a picture, but styles look different on every individual, so it is extremely important to look around, try on multiple styles and be extremely satisfied before making your purchase.

Can You Explain the Different Types of Cap Constructions?

The cap is the base of the wig onto which hair is attached. Wigs are available with several different types of caps and the hair of the wig is then attached to the cap using various techniques. Each cap type has its own distinct advantages.

A standard cap is the most common and most affordable cap design. The layers of hair are machine-sewed onto the cap, which has a closed lace layer at the crown. The hair is predesigned into a specific style and the crown is often lightly teased or crimped so you cannot see down through to the cap. This type of cap often gives the hair a natural lift at the crown for volume.

Monofilament caps: Monofilament caps are constructed using a thin, breathable mesh material at the crown that gives the illusion of skin and the hair appears to be growing out of a real scalp. Monofilament caps offer the most natural look as well as styling versatility because each hair is individually hand tied at the crown so the hair can be parted and brushed in any direction. The entire wig may be hand tied or the wig may have a monofilament crown with wefted sides and back. Monofilament wigs are an especially good choice for those with severe or total hair loss as the cap is soft, unlike cloth material, which can be itchy to those with sensitive scalps.

Lace Front Wigs: A Lace wig is an extremely popular and one of the most natural choices of wigs. A lace material is used at the base where each unit of hair is hand-tied onto the lace. This creates an invisible and undetectable hairline. Lace front wigs give the illusion that hair is growing out of your scalp therefore making it look very natural.

How Long Does It Take to Receive a Wig?

We have over 250 wigs in stock, so if you find a style and color we have in stock, you can take it home the same day! If you need to order a wig in a different color, it generally takes about 1-2 weeks to come in.

Are Appointments Needed to Try on Wigs?

No appointment is needed if you visit the store during our regular operating hours. One of Pili's staff members or hairdresser will be there to show you around the store and help you try on different styles.

What's the Difference between Synthetic and Human Hair?

There are advantages and disadvantages to both synthetic and human hair. Two of the main advantages of purchasing a synthetic wig are its price and ease of wear. Synthetic wigs are less expensive than human hair and they hold their shape much better.

Synthetic wigs are made of man-made material that has “style memory” and are designed to snap back into place after washing. Synthetic wigs are truly wash and wear. But synthetic wigs also have some drawbacks. Once the wig is set at the factory, the style and color cannot be changed. Heat (hot rollers, curlers, blow dryers, and straighteners) will permanently damage synthetic hair.

A human hair wig is the most natural-looking option. Heat can be applied to human hair so it can be styled, curled, straightened, permed, etc. Human hair can also be dyed to match your own natural color. Human hair wigs are also more durable than synthetic wigs and your wig can last twice as long as a synthetic if properly cared for. However, human hair wigs are more expensive than synthetic wigs and require more care. They have to be shampooed, dried, styled and conditioned, just like your natural hair. Like your hair, they can lose their style if they get wet and frizz on humid days.

What is a Heat-Friendly Synthetic Wig?

Using breakthrough heat defiant fibers, heat-friendly wigs are designed to give you the power to reinvent your look day after day. Blow dry, flat iron, crimp and curl HF wigs just like natural human hair - the fibers can be styled with heat up to 350 degrees. Perfect for high energy days or haute couture nights, HF wigs can be restyled daily to suit your mood, or worn straight out of the box for stunning, all-day beauty.

Will Insurance Cover the Cost of My Wig?

Many insurances do cover the cost of a wig if you are suffering hair loss due to medical reasons. Please ask your doctor for a prescription for a "cranial prosthesis" and bring a copy with you to the store. We will write you a receipt for "medical use" which you will submit with your doctor’s prescription. If your insurance covers the cost, they will send the reimbursement directly to you.
